This is an Epiphone Dot Studio in Cherry finish. A pared down version of the well-known ‘Dot’, this instrument was made in China in 2014, and features a set-neck construction comprising a Laminated Mahogany body with Mahogany centre block, Mahogany neck and 22 fret Rosewood fingerboard. Chrome hardware is fitted including a T-o-M bridge and StopBar tailpiece along with a set of Grover Rotomatic tuning machines. A pair of Epiphone Alnico Classic humbucking pickups are installed, and are wired to a 3-way toggle switch and master volume and tone controls.
The Mahogany neck plays very well, with the SlimTaper D profile feeling smooth and articulate in the hand for a responsive playing experience across the register. There is a slightly flattened area to the centre of the profile which encourages ergonomic thumb positioning for melodic lines and tricky chord voicings. The Rosewood of the fingerboard is pleasant under the fingers, and with its 12” radius is practical for a wide range of styles and techniques. Along with the double cutaways and familiar ‘ES-335’ body design, this is a guitar which provides comfortable playability and practicality in both standing and seated positions.
As with the more common Epiphone Dot, the Dot Studio features a semi-hollow construction. Semi-hollow bodies strike a perfect balance between the open, airy and dynamically responsive tone of a hollow guitar, whilst being more practical for live use thanks to their feedback resistant centre block. However, this Studio model is constructed from Mahogany rather than Maple. This produces a deep richness to the tone which is distinct from the Maple-constructed Dot. The pair of Epiphone Alnico Classic humbucking pickups deliver thick and full-bodied tones which work well in a wide variety of styles and settings, encompassing crystal clean sounds and crunchy distortion tones alike.
